Simple Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Kids

February 14, 2013

Here’s how we are celebrating this day of love… The boys woke up to a “bucket of love” when they came downstairs this morning.photo-22

I decided to forgo the traditional Valentine’s Day gifts i.e. chocolate and teddy bears and went with this cheap and easy idea. They boys are still on toy overload from Christmas and their birthdays are fast approaching so I figured this would be something fun, different, and non-sugar-high provoking. I just filled up a bucket of balloons and wrote down silly things that I love about each one of them.

dsc_0393Obviously the boys can’t read yet, but I got some big smiles when I read the balloons to them.   Then I put on some music and let them have a little dance party. My almost 2 year old requested “Brokenhearted” by Karmin and the big boy asked for “Give Your Heart a Break” by Demi Lovato…. toddler heartache I presume?

I actually use it on a daily basis, but today we took a moment to really appreciate that heart shape 😉 Even my husband requests “heart sandwich pb and j’s” –  for some reason they really do just taste better. We started off with heart shaped bird’s nests. There are a million names for this fried-egg-in-bread-deliciousness, but in my family we call it a bird’s nest so I’m going with that!

Now onto lunch. Okay so I had a weak, very weak, pregnancy moment in the supermarket yesterday. I went food shopping hungry (the ultimate supermarket shopping violation), and also right after a doctor’s “weigh in” as I like to call my monthly check ups. I was a pound under my previous pregnancy weight at this same point in time with my second son. So what did I do? Bought some marshmallow fluff to even things out! Wouldn’t want this little baby bean to get cheated on any of the good stuff! For lunch we had heart shaped fluffernutters with sliced banana.

I was in heaven, but shockingly my boys weren’t that into them! (Probably a good thing…) And as for me on this Valentine’s Day, this ecard pretty much sums it up: photo 4 Happy Valentine’s Day!
