Public Service Announcement

Perfect fall evening. Kids asleep. Wine on the porch with my husband…. While listening to music on my MacBook Pro. wine1

Picture perfect, right?

Don’t do this people!

Don’t do it.

First, you must ask yourself this question: “Have I backed up my 8,923 pictures and 739 videos of my children before consuming any form of liquid around my computer?”

Sadly, I did not ask myself this question and then this happened:

wine1(husbands fault)

I had chest pains. I was short of breath. Three years of pictures, memories, and little baby voices, were potentially gone forever.

I dragged all 3 of my children to the Apple store (something you should never do), madly elbowing through swarms of people in line for the new iPhone 5, cornered a sweet technician and told him my sob story. He gently warned me that liquid damage could potentially ruin a hard drive and nothing could be done to retrieve the data.

And then I warned him I would cry.

Ten painful minutes filled with heart pumping anxiety passed and finally the door labeled “Employees Only” swung toward me. Suddenly everything was in slow motion as he walked over to deliver my fate. He had good news and bad news.

Bad News: My computer was toast.

Good News: My hard drive was fine.

I might have kissed him. Every mom knows that 8,923 pictures and 739 videos of your children are priceless.

Please, PLEASE! Back up your computers regularly and/or do not deem yourself invincible to spills just because your toddlers are asleep. 31 year olds can spill too.

Those hours where I thought my pictures were gone were PAINFUL.

Back it up now. Do it.

That’s all I have to say about that.

So glad you were able to get the pictures and videos back! My husband and I back up to each others’ computers for this reason, but it is one of my biggest fears!

That happened to me (well, slightly different story) and I started backing up as well. My daughter dropped a glass of water and the water flew into the air and landed on the computer. Computer was toast but hard drive was miraculously saved! Glad you didn’t lose your pictures!

Thanks! Who doesn’t need a little art therapy once in a while? Someday I’ll make it beyond the stick figure… or not!

Thanks for the reminder, and whoof, I can only imagine the 3 kids in the Apple store on iPhone release day. I’ve used Carbonite to automatically backup my computer every night and it’s a great service with lots of peace of mind. Cheers for more nights on the deck with your backed-up computer! (hope the hubby upgraded it for you.) 😉

I love that the picture shows it being Paul’s fault versus yours. I mean isn’t it always the husband’s fault? 🙂

don’t miss a post
