Burlap Turkeys

November 24, 2013

I got desperate. I am really not the crafty type, but like I said, I got desperate.

Morning cartoons – check.

Breakfast – check.

Kids play with toys – check.

Husband at work for the 4th weekend in a row – check.

Let me hashtag it out for ya since I’m pretty sure 95% of people now think in hashtags: #2 hoursuntillunch #whattheheckarewegoingtodo #30degreesoutside  #windy #don’tfeellikechangingoutofpajamas #omg #thanksgivingisthursday #channelyourinnermartha #letsmaketurkeys

Begrudgingly I trekked upstairs to get my craft bag. I don’t know why I hate doing crafts so much, but I just do. I’m sure it has something to do with the mess, but is one of the main reasons I never taught any grade below 4th. Because grades below 4th do lots of crafts… and singing… and I can’t do that either.

I dumped the bag. Found some burlap, felt, pipe cleaners, and puffy silver ball thingys. Using the burlap, I cut 2 different sized cirlces for the body and head. Used the felt to cut feathers, a beak and gobbler, and a large square for the background. And finally, 3 inch pipe cleaners for the legs and a puffy silver ball thingy for the eye…. and grabbed some glue.

I distributed a set of materials to my “class”… my 4 year old and 2 year old. Stuck the baby in his highchair and let him gnaw on a teething biscuit because the poor guy is getting 4 top teeth all at once…. and did a little “you do as I do” following directions lesson. They turned out super cute and I honestly can’t even tell which one is my own.

…and then there was only one hour left until lunch.

So I gave them the remaining bag of pipe cleaners and a strainer and they did this:

And after about five minutes I noticed they stopped doing that and were pretending the pipe cleaners were “guys” and they were making them wrestle. I don’t know…it’s a boy thing. But before I knew it, it was lunch time. Mission accomplished.

These turned out really cute! (And I totally get the boys playing “guys”. Who these guys are is actually one of my great questions in life.)

OH, my boys would totally make them wrestle too! What a great craft! Thanks so much for sharing… definitely putting on our to-do list for this long week off from school!

Yea, I’m not much for crafts BUT you need something to do when they are stuck home & inside. Believe ME. TV & electronics will only take you so far, lol!

Wow! For not being crafty, you did a great job. I think you’re deceived! Thanks for linking up with the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party. I have pinned your post to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Board!

I love the idea of giving kids items and then seeing where their creativity takes them!
