Confession: I (strongly) dislike crafts.
I dislike them so much that I have an un-crafty menu tab in my header bar and haven’t added anything to it in, oh say, 6 months or so.
When I first started blogging I would do crafts with my kids just so I could blog about them and people would think, “Oh wow, look at her! Doing such cute things with her kids all the time. What a great mom.” Yeah. Those feelings lasted a few months before I thought to myself, “Self. You hate crafts. Stop faking it.” And then the sun came out, it was warm enough for my kids could do the most glorious thing in the world – PLAY OUTSIDE – and I shoved every last morsel of crafty supplies we owned into the deepest corner of a closet faster than anyone could say “hot glue gun”.
But you guys. The weather is getting colder. And rainier. And predictions for this winter are not looking good. And clouding my visions of pumpkin picking, hayrides and hot apple cider is the notion that I’m gonna have to start finding ways to keep my kids occupied INDOORS. And I keep seeing flashes of crayons and glue and feathers, oh my! Come on, say it with me now, “NOOOOOOOO!” Can you tell the hell that was last winter did a number on me?
But I would be doing a disservice to my kids if I didn’t at least expose them to the artsy side, right? Sadly, I have a lot of work to do. Yesterday I tried decorating pumpkins with my kids and my youngest son ate a marker. Oh sweetie, that was just fuel to my fire. But dammit, I’m committed. I’m gonna show Pinterest who is boss and do ONE un-crafty craft per week. And if it turns out (or it doesn’t) I’ll write about it. So for all you un-crafty people out there – gear up! (And if you’re as terrified with winter as I am you might want to read this post. I think it is the most pinned post I ever wrote.)
Back to un-crafty things. In an effort to please my son who is appalled that we don’t have any Halloween decorations, I decide we could make some. Being the un-crafty mom that I am, I looked in my craft bag and the supplies were meager. I did find, however, cotton balls, pipe cleaners and puffy ball thingies.
Here is what we came up with, the most un-crafty halloween crafty you’ll ever meet:
Now if that doesn’t knock your socks off then I don’t know what will.
Wanna meet the entourage?
For those of you who are not completely wowed and haven’t pinned these images to every craft and Halloween board you have (not sure why you wouldn’t though), don’t fear…….I know a real, live elementary school art teacher and she’s agreed to help a mother out. Stay tuned.
