Clearly I am not in charge of cooking this year (or any year) which is why I have time to think of such things as what to wear on Thanksgiving. I’ll stick to what I know best – bringing the veggie tray – and making sure all of my kids are accounted for while wearing something that is equal parts chic and cozy. Thanksgiving, for us, typically includes a little knock-around-football, a walk around the neighborhood, and ok, maybe a liiiitle cooking on my part (I think I signed up to bring this appetizer this year) and then a lot of eating. Dressing “up” is out of the question – I need my Thanksgiving outfit to work for all parts of this fun family day, most of which we spend outside. I came up with a simple formula that anyone can pull off.
Cozy Sweater + Distressed Jeans + OTK Boots + Cute Beanie + Statement Bag
I love the idea of an oversized sweater for Thanksgiving for a few reasons. Well, scratch that, for one reason: You can have that second helping of pumpkin pie, unbutton your top button, and no one will ever know. I love because of the extra sheen layer at the bottom to give a basic gray sweater a little something extra. Sadly, it is sold out, but this one and this one are both similar It’s one of those “I live in this” pieces.
The over-the-knee boots (OTK) add the chic-factor to your outfit. Yes people, these boots are everywhere and I promise if you wear them you won’t be mistaken for Julia Roberts ala her “Pretty Woman Days”. And for those of you who think you are too short…. I am barely 5’4. Barely. And oddly enough, OTK boots actually make your legs look longer and skinnier. It’s sort of a miracle. I was hesitant to try these out at first so I picked up this super inexpensive pair (now sold out but these are similar) at Forever21 (because I saw them featured on WhoWhatWear) and am sold. Now saving my pennies for these babies. But the ones I bought totally work and are super lightweight and comfortable.
I threw this beanie in my cart at the last minute (probably so I could get the free shipping when I bought my boots) and it turned out to be a super cute “extra”. I’ve seen this faux fur pom pom in several other stores (like here and here) for like quadruple the price. But me? I’m digging this $8 hat. No?
The jeans – the easy part (more sizes in this similar style). I’m pretty much only wearing distressed jeans these days. My kids love pulling the rips even more, of course, but I love the laid back vibe they give off. Because life with three boys so laid back. Ha ha no.
And lastly, the bag. Oh how I love this Waltzing Matilda tote. It’s made from vintage canvas and roomie enough for all my kids “stuff” plus any leftovers that we are lucky enough to score from the turkey day feast. I’m convinced everyone needs this bag – great for soccer momming it on the sidelines, going to the gym, or just running errands. You can order online here or locals can pop into the store in downtown Wayne. Make sure to mention this post if you go in! More Waltzing Matilda amazingness is coming to the blog very soon so stay tuned!
Oh, and here’s a little Splurge and Save Lookbook with a few of my favorite cozy sweaters and OTK boots. Let me know your favorite!
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
