This week’s edition of upping the mom wardrobe game is all about rethinking our basics. How many Saturdays are spent running around in jeans and a thermal? It’s easy, it works, but unless your thermal looks like this, it’s probably a little boring. The responses to my recent survey show an overwhelming amount of moms who want to see some workwear fashion on The Motherchic (and I promise I am working on it!), but for those moms who DO work and wear office clothes all week, your weekend wardrobe deserves to be fun. One easy way to add a little more flair to your outfit is to rethink your basics. Yes, you can take a basic and add a cool necklace or a scarf and that totally works, but not-so-basic basics are one of my favorite ways to throw on an outfit and feel styled without really trying.
Take this tunic for example. It’s your thermal’s stylish cousin – bubbling with oversized, drapey goodness.
There’s a little more length (which makes legging lovers very happy) and a little more flow.
The uneven hem-line, the drape, the clinge-age to the baby bump (not maternity, but totally works without adding bulk) – all combined make this, in my opinion, a not-so-basic basic.
Weekends, watch out! Things are about to get a little more….. interesting.
But wait. Not done yet. Here is another little trick.
Add some feminine detail with a little lace bralette peekaboo action. I’m living in these undergarments these days because thanks to pregnancy, I can (score!). They are super comfortable, and add that little delicate detail that is missing from most of our winter wardrobes. (They are great under tanks in the summer too and the solution to the what-bra-can-I-hide-under-spaghetti-strap-problem. It’s okay if these show a little – that’s what they are meant for. ) So yes, a great investment piece that you will wear all year!
This guy approves! Kidding!!!!
Obviously he is smiling at my sense of humor;)
But your husband probably will!
And last but not least, game-changer earrings. If you haven’t tried ear jackets, now is the time! It’s like an updated stud (that babies can’t rip out like danglers!). This is more than I would typically spend on earrings, but you can wear it 6 different ways – so price per style is on point!
Wearing:
Jacket (sold out of the color I am wearing but this is similar, and I LOVE this which would give a similar look and is on super sale)
Jeans (maternity!)
And on the kiddo: Sweatshirt (loving this new kids line!) // Vest // Jeans // Sneakers (hands down best kids sneakers we’ve ever tried)
And just in case you are still thinking about those bralettes ;), here are a few more of my favorite:
Okay back to the basics that aren’t so basic. With the help of my sister (the one who is a clothing buyer – a.k.a. the one who actually knows what she’s talking about) we’ve rounded up a few basics that have that extra special something to make your weekend wardrobe a little more exciting.
