1 Little Black Dress, 4 Ways and Fall Staples

August 5, 2017

Inarguably, a little black dress is a wardrobe staple. Now that we are midway through summer and Halloween candy is already fully stocked in the markets (come on, really….), I thought it would be a good time to show how you can extend your favorite LBD throughout the seasons ahead. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is coming to an end which means this is your last chance to get colder weather essentials at the discounted prices. I firmly believe that a great fall wardrobe is centered around a few key items – a great pair of booties/boots, a splurge-worthy sweater, a utility jacket, and a classic trench – all of which are featured in this post. I know many coveted items have sold out, but I’ve done my best to link to similar items and will continue to call out restock alerts on Facebook.

The Little Black Dress, Alone.

In the heat of the summer, a little black dress doesn’t need much else. These transitional peep toe booties are an easy way to elevate the look of a basic dress for weekend.  You can also wear a basic shift to work with classic pumps or ballet flats. With a patterned print I usually keep accessories to a minimum. Grab your favorite sunnies and done! If you are wearing a solid shift, like this one, I would add a bold necklace.

The Little Black Dress, Skirted.

When the weather starts to cool down, swap out the open toe shoes for booties or tall boots, and play around with layering a dress with a pullover. It creates the appearance of a skirt and creates an entirely new look. This particular pullover, is definitely a splurge item, but it’s butter soft (those with who can’t stand itchy sweaters, take note) and has an amazing shape.

The Little Black Dress, Layered.

For a casual, weekend vibe, layer on a utility jacket. Mixing prints is approved as longs as you have one small pattern (the polka dots) and one larger pattern (the camo) and the colors compliment each other. For those looking for a more subdued look, try a solid jacket like this one.

The Little Black Dress, Winterized.

As you head into winter, don’t pack up your dresses just yet! Keep the layers coming in the form of your coziest cardigan or an all weather trench. A trench coat is another classic piece that I think belongs in every closet. I bought the one I am wearing a few years ago and was so happy to see that it is a part of the anniversary sale. It looks just as great over a dress as it does athletic leggings with sneakers.

Great post! I have this dress in a navy print and I’ve been saving it for fall. I will definitely be trying the skirted idea.
