I’ve been having so much fun answering all of your questions on my Instagram stories, that I thought I would put a few of the most asked questions into a blog post. But first, here are a few of the most popular looks I’ve shared to round out summer….
How do you balance/manage 4 kids and a business? I think this is always a work in progress, but right now I feel like I am in a really good place. I think it takes a VERY special person to be able to work from home and create clear work time/kid time boundaries. Annnnd, I am not that person. It wasn’t until I got an office space so I could truly separate the two, that I was giving my family and my business the right attention at the right time.
I think it’s all about recognizing your own faults and doing something about it to make the situation work no matter what your job situation looks like. Right now I work in my office all day and am home in time to get my kids off the bus, make/eat dinner with them, help with homework, take them to sports etc…
My baby is the only one not in school yet so I have a wonderful babysitter who hangs with him during the day. She also helps me with things around my house while he naps so I am able to spend more time with my kids when I get home. I have come to realize that I can’t do it all on my own so investing in help is worth it one billion percent! I also have two amazing women who help me with the blog behind the scenes so when I am with my kids everything is still running smoothly on the blog front. And then as soon as my kids go to bed I put in a few more hours of work before I go to sleep – with wine in hand of course.
What’s your best advice for managing the chaos of four boys? I know a lot of boy moms read my blog, but gender aside, a house full of any kids can be crazy! I am pretty relaxed by nature and let my kids let loose as long as they are being safe(ish). Yes there is a lot of running, tumbling, wrestling, mess making, but as long as they are laughing I feel like it is just their way of playing and bonding. Yes, sometimes I can’t handle it and snap, but for the most part I just chalk it up to kids being kids…. and dangle the “no dessert until you’ve cleaned up this mess” carrot every single night.
What are your favorite high waisted jeans? I’ve been loving Madewell for their selection of high waist jeans, especially the exposed buttons! I also just got an amazing pair in from Everlane. Here is a list of all of my favorite denim.
What is your nightly skincare routine? Check out this post here!
How old are you? 27 (plus 8).
How tall are you? 5’4
Do you have advice for someone wanting to start a blog? It’s definitely hard building something from the ground up and can be an emotional experience. I started my blog as a hobby with no expectation of it ever becoming anything. It was purely for fun and I think that is why it caught on – because it was authentic and came from a genuine place.
Once I realized that I could turn this passion into a full time job, I had to immerse my entire self into it. I work 50-60 hours per week and now have 2 full time employees – none of which would have happened if I didn’t take that risk. I worked for almost three years without making a cent. By posting consistently, staying true to myself, and engaging with my readers I was able to build the following I have today. I wish I had a secret to share, but there is none beyond following your heart and learning from trial and error.
Sometimes I wish I had a boss who could tell me what to do, but that is the joy of being an entrepreneur. You need to learn to listen to yourself, do the research, make plans, set goals and follow through.
Basically what I am saying is that 72% of the time, I am winging it.
What did you do before you started blogging? I was an elementary school teacher! I taught 4th and 5th grade for 7 years. After I had my second son I decided to stay home with my kids and casually started writing this blog for an outlet 🙂
How do you stay fit when you’re a busy working mom? I try to workout when I can but these days it is really hard to find the time. I try to eat healthy, small meals throughout the day. Here is a post on a great circuit workout I do when I have 20 minutes, and in the fall when my kids go back to school I have big plans for more yoga and running (my 2 workouts of choice).
Do you ever sell the clothes you don’t wear anymore? I just started putting some of my clothes on a Poshmark page! Loads more to come soon so check back!
Do you buy all of the clothes you feature? It’s a mix of both! Some clothes are gifted by brands and some I purchase on my own. Because of the nature of my job I need to feature clothes that readers can purchase (people don’t like when I link to similar :)) so my closet turns over much faster than the average person.
What fall trends are you most excited about? I’ve already done a post on animal print which clearly I am VERY excited about! Also, western details in pieces like booties and belts will be fun to play around with. And when it comes to denim, get ready for some different silhouettes (wide leg, flare)….. and as always, plaid! Stay tuned for a full fall trend report coming your way soon!
How old are your kids and where do you shop for them? My boys are all 2 years apart and all born in April 🙂 Well, except for the baby who is three years younger and born in May. They are 9,7,5, and 2…. and yes I am done having kids! My boys live in sports clothes so I’m constantly buying Under Armour, but I also love J.Crew Factory and Target! Check out this post for their back to school looks!
And that’s all for now! I know there are still a bunch of questions I didn’t get to, but I promise I will do another round of this!
