Okay, this isn’t really a summer only tradition, it’s an almost weekly, year-round tradition. However, I usually only host in the summer because, well, my house is little and my family is huge and I need to be able to utilize our outdoor space. Our tradition is to have a family dinner with grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, at one person’s house on Sunday nights. It’s basically organized chaos with an emphasis on the chaos. At any given dinner, there could be anywhere from 8-12 kids under the age of 12 (8 of which are boys), running rampant around the house while 8-12 adults are trying to prep food, drink wine, and keep an accurate head count of the kids.
But really, I swear it’s fun.
It’s actually one of my favorite parts of the week and coming from a large family, the chaos is just part of my “normal”.
But here’s the thing, I love to host, but I don’t like to cook. I’m the family member that gets the little pat on the back when I ask what I can bring, “Just bring yourself and your kids. Maybe some carrot sticks if you can handle it.” Hey, we all have our strengths. But this year I decided to step up my game – if I’m not going to cook, at least I can set the table, right?
These get-togethers are always happy and light and low key, so I decided to up my outdoor entertaining game this year to match that mood. What is happier that bright colors and citrus fruits?! I went a little nuts Macy’s Dining & Entertaining department to take advantage of the Memorial Day Sale happening now where you can save 20% using code MEMDAY and get free shipping over $75! I am pretty proud of the table me and my little guy set.
From melamine plates plates and serveware, to outdoor-safe glasses, to no-fuss flowers for a 10-second ready center piece, to the cutest little salt and pepper shakers you ever did see and BOOM. Table is set. Now we just have to wait for the crew and hope they are bringing a main dish that will go with my sub-par salad and cheese plate. You can’t mess up a cheese plate, right?
Can’t forget the leftovers!
