Clean(er) Beauty Favorites

Thank you to Nordstrom and ShopStyle for sponsoring this post.

Back in 2007, I went completely gluten free. After a few anaphylactic episodes that happened during exercise, my allergist diagnosed me with “exercise induced anaphylaxis”. Yes, that basically means I am allergic to exercise, BUT only if I eat gluten prior to working out. Crazy, right? But here’s the thing about being gluten free in 2007, there were only like 2 products on the gluten free market. They all tasted like, yep you guessed it… cardboard. A year later I got pregnant and craved #allthecarbs so I decided to go back on gluten and just work out first thing in the morning before eating.

Fast forward a little more than a decade and there are aisles upon aisles of gluten free options making it much easier to adhere to such a specific diet. Because let’s face it, a world without pizza is not a world I want to live in (Kidding. Sort of.)

My point about sharing this story in the first place is that we have come a long way in terms of having more options for people who choose or need to live a certain lifestyle. The same sentiment applies to beauty products. It’s easier now than ever to purchase products that have (or don’t have) certain ingredients making it easier to make more informed decisions for what we put in or on our bodies.

I am definitely not 100% “clean” when it comes to beauty, but as I learn about more brands that are free of sulfates, phthalates, parabens, petrochemicals, mineral oil, silicone and talc I’ve started to dabble, or to clean up my act if you will. Today’s post is all about sharing some brands that I have come to love that are much cleaner than products I used to use without thinking twice. I am not saying they are all 100% perfect – it’s important to do your own research when purchasing products with/without certain ingredients. That being said, Nordstrom makes shopping for natural beauty products super simple with their Natural Beauty & Wellness page. They also give you free samples with your purchase, just an added bonus!

Here are some beauty products I use daily….and the ratings for all of these speak for themselves!

Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Wash // This super cleanser gently exfoliates the skin promoting cell turnover and brightens your complexion by sloughing off dead skin. It is also super moisturizing so your skin will not feel dry/tight after using. Get it on sale now for 33% off!

Arcona Triad Toner Pads // I like to think of these pads as my daily dose of antioxidants. These toner pads are infused with cranberry extract (smells so fresh) and help to get rid of excess make up while also hydrating your face. I use these after washing my face and before serums/moisturizers.

Sunday Riley Good Genes // When I think of the word “lactic acid” I think of that burning sensation in my legs during the last 100 meters of a race. Oh the track days…. but apparently when lactic acid is applied to your face, it’s a little miracle worker. After 3 minutes you will see a rosier tone in your cheeks and they will appear “plumped”. The lactic acid also works to exfoliate the skin and reduce fine lines/wrinkles. Licorice is another main ingredient which helps to reduce age spots and discoloration. It’s super concentrated and a little goes a long way. Pricey, yes. Worth it? I haven’t met anyone who has tried it say they don’t love it.

Herbivore Botanicals Coconut Ultra Hydration Oil // Just like my kids I despise getting out of the shower and applying cold lotion. Here is a little secret: body oil. For whatever reason it seems much warmer 😂. With a base of coconut oil and Co2, this product is super hydrating and has a very light scent. Herbivore is known for using food-grade plant-based ingredients in their products, while also being totally zen-worthy.

R + Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo // I’ve tried a lot of dry shampoos in my day and I keep going back to this one because it is formulated without parabens, sulfates (SLS or SLES), mineral oil and petrolatum. It also doesn’t leave a white residue so it truly leaves your hair feeling fresh. And the scent you ask? Bergamot, wild fig, lotus flower, cedarwood, …. sound good to anyone?!
